The True Nature of Mankind
Women in the Bible
Part 5
Miriam
("strong")
Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, was one of the
thirteen prophetesses. She was the first woman singer mentioned in
the Bible. When Moses was put into the Nile, she guarded his cradle
until Pharoah's daughter found the child. Miriam was struck with
leprosy for rebuking Moses about his wife, Zipporah, but later was
cured by Moses. She was a woman that proved that spiritual
leadership was not reserved for men only.
♦
Exodus 2:4 And his sister
stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. 5 And the
daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her
maidens walked along by the river's side; and when she saw the ark
among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it.
♦
Exodus 2:20 And Miriam the
prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all
the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. 21
And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath
triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into
the sea.
Phebe/ Phoebe
("shining, bright")
Phebe was a deaconess of the church at Cenchreae. Paul
sent salutations to her. It is believed she is the women who carried
Paul's letters to the Romans.
♦
Romans 16:1 I commend unto you
Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at
Cenchrea: 2 That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh
saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need
of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.
Prisca / Priscilla
("simplicity")
Priscilla was the wife of Aquila. Together they
ministered together as a team from their home showing that the
ministry of women was readily accepted.
♦
Acts 18:2 And found a
certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy,
with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all
Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.
♦
Acts 18:18 And Paul after this
tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the
brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and
Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow.
♦
Acts 18:26 And he began to speak
boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard,
they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more
perfectly.
♦
Romans 16: 3 Greet Priscilla and
Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: 4 Who have for my life
laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but
also all the churches of the Gentiles.
Puah
Puah was a midwife, in Egypt, in the time of Moses. She
disregarded the Pharaoh's order to kill all newborn Hebrew male
infants.
♦
Exodus 1:15 And the king
of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one
was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah: 16 And he said, When
ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon
the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a
daughter, then she shall live. 17 But the midwives feared God, and
did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men
children alive.
Rachab / Rahab
("spacious, broad")
Rahab was a harlot and an ancestress of Christ who
helped the two Hebrew spies Joshua sent to Jericho. For her loyalty
to God, she and her household were saved when the Israelites took
the city of Jericho. She and Sarah are the two faithful women
mentioned in Hebrews. Rahab manufactured linens, provided for her
family, and was courageous and brave. She is remembered as one of
the greatest heroines of Israel. By her kind and courageous acts,
Rahab demonstrated her deep and abiding faith in God.
♦
Joshua 2:1 And Joshua the
son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go
view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an
harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there. 2 And it was told the
king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night
of the children of Israel to search out the country. 3 And the king
of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are
come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come
to search out all the country.
♦
Joshua 6:17 And the city
shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the LORD:
only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in
the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.
♦
Joshua 6:23 And the young men
that were spies went in, and brought out Rahab, and her father, and
her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought
out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel. 24
And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only
the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they
put into the treasury of the house of the LORD. 25 And Joshua saved
Rahab the harlot alive, and her father's household, and all that she
had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid
the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.
Rachel
("ewe, sheep, lamb")
Rachel was the daughter of Laban, wife of Jacob and the
mother of Joseph and Benjamin. She was one of the barren women of
the Bible who was blessed by God with the gift of children. Rachel
was the fourth matriarch of the Jewish peoples and is considered the
mother of the five northern tribes. Her sepulchral pillar is the
first memorial on record.
♦
Genesis 1:9 And while he
yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep; for she
kept them. 10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the
daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his
mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from
the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's
brother. 11 And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and
wept. 12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and
that he was Rebekah's son: and she ran and told her father.
♦
Genesis 30:1 And when Rachel saw
that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said
unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die. 2 And Jacob's
anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God's stead,
who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?
♦
Genesis 30:22 And God
remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb. 23
And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my
reproach: 24 And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD
shall add to me another son.
♦
Genesis 48:7 And as for
me, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan
in the way, when yet there was but a little way to come unto Ephrath:
and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath; the same is Bethlehem.
♦
1 Samuel 10:2 When thou art
departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's
sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say
unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo,
thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you,
saying, What shall I do for my son?
♦
Jeremiah 31: 15 Thus saith
the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter
weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for
her children, because they were not. 16 Thus saith the LORD; Refrain
thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work
shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from
the land of the enemy.
